Library Book Club Policies: Group Discussion Guidelines

  • All attendees are assumed to have read the monthly selection. Completion of the book is not mandatory, but be prepared for spoilers.
  • Discuss to learn from each other, not argue over individual points. Differing opinions should be expressed respectfully with the intent to disagree, not persuade others to modify their opinions.
  • All opinions are welcome and attendees should make a sincere effort to not take anything discussed personally or get offended. Likewise, no one will attack others' beliefs or opinions, nor criticize each other on a personal level.
  • The language needed to express one's opinion can be difficult at times. Attendees should be patient and respectful when others are trying to express themselves.
  • The person speaking should have the group's undivided attention. Only one person should speak at a time. Everyone will be given an opportunity to share. Participation is not required, though.
  • The group leader will allow discussion to progress naturally but will redirect discussion to allow others opportunities to share their thoughts.
  • Although tangential topics are a welcome area of discussion, the group leader will make an effort to bring the discussion back to the book if it gets too far off topic.
  • Failure to adhere to these rules can result in a dis-invitation from the group.

 

Title Selection Guidelines

Titles must meet four criteria:

  • Must relate to the group's stated genre
  • Topic must seem appealing to the majority of the group
  • Must be readily available to borrow from the library
  • Must be in a page range set by the group leader
  • The group leader will actively seek titles that differ from one to the next, varying the tone and topic as much as possible month to month.
  • Selecting topics of a diverse nature and ones that appeal to the majority of the group may at times be competing interests. While the group doesn't aim to avoid any specific topics, even if they are considered controversial, certain topics may be turned down if the group leader feels they wouldn't be appealing to current or potential new members.
  • Titles selected must be easily acquired through the library. Titles will only be considered if the library can readily acquire copies in multiple formats for current and potential new members.
  • New and popular titles are desirable but may not be considered easy to acquire since they often have long hold lists.
  • Methods of acquiring titles beyond library use will not be pursued. One of the goals of the club is to facilitate the use of library items.
  • The title's page length should be inviting to new members and not a burden on current attendees. The group leader will choose titles they themselves can read by the assigned date without it being a hardship.
  • Suggestions for new titles are always welcome but must meet the above criteria and be approved by the group leader.
  • If a suggested title is selected, it is up to the group leader's judgment as to when the club will read it. This may mean waiting several months, or until the next year's list is created, before the title is incorporated into the reading list.
